Land pollution: causes, effects, and prevention

For this week, I am going to talk about land pollution. When I think of land pollution, I imagine a lot of emissions and waste disposal, but it is so much more than that. The author of this article informs us of all the forms of land pollution.

First of all, land pollution is not only polluting in top of the ground, it is also polluting below ground level. This way it pollutes the fertility, the soil, and the groundwater. As I said before, we all know that litter (wrong disposal of waste products) and gas emissions are the most known causes for land pollution, but there is also mining, urbanization and construction, and even agriculture. I was so shocked about the last one! The author states that "agriculture pollution can occur when contamination created as a by-product of raising livestock and growing food crops is released into the environment, and the contamination is vast. " So even growing our own food can pollute the land. \

I was also shocked about all the effects that were given. Land pollution doesn't only make the soil infertile, it also makes it unsafe for us to drink water. Another bad effect is that, because of the soil being polluted, it can be very dry which causes wildfires. That would explain all the wildfires in Australia, for example.

Fortunately, the author also gives us tips to prevent land pollution. Of course, we all know that recycling is a good way to start, but reforestation was a new tip for me. If we can plant trees in open areas, it will help with the change from carbon dioxide to oxide and it will prevent more wildfires and floods. The last tip is to use fewer pesticides and chemicals in agriculture. I don't think that we need all those chemicals and I think that it also affects the taste of the product.

I chose this article because it gave me a whole new insight into land pollution. We learned new causes, effects, and most importantly, more ways to prevent it.

  1. Yes, lots of problems from modern chemical agriculture. Pesticides and fertilizers, and even plain old erosion...

  2. It’s really disturbing to see how much of what we do causes so much pollution. It seems strange we have yet to find cleaner solutions for these issues with how advanced we have become since introducing things like pesticides, ice melts, and other things we use for convenience in our daily lives.
