Blog 5 land: waste disposal - Yenne Schepers
Why America generates the most waste
In this article, we talk about the increase in waste disposal, especially in America. The author gives us a map of where you can see the top 5 countries that generate the most waste. Those countries are The United States, China, Brazil, Japan, and Germany because those countries are the most industrialized. Something significant: The United States generates the most waste even though China has a bigger population. That is because the Americans don’t see the problem here. They don’t see the consequences of not recycling or just throwing away their waste.
Let me tell you, there are some serious consequences. For example, waste is toxic and if we just throw it away on the grass, it will appear in our groundwater so also in our drinking water. This causes many diseases. If we burn waste, the air will be polluted, which causes trouble for us to breathe. As of last, it is also a financial waste because some countries set up plans to try to increase recycling, but if nobody does, all the money goes to waste.
The author gives us also two important tips: we need to make sure that the waste actually will be collected for disposal and we need to change our own behavior.
When I came to America, I also noticed that most Americans don’t see the problem of global warmth and they easily throw away garbage on the streets instead of a trash bag. They also don’t finish their plate when they eat, which I think is a little bit selfish against poor people who would fight for that amount of food that they leave on the plate. This needs to change! We really need to become more aware of the current situation and start taking action.
