6.) Actions Against Extinction - Dayton Samuels

With my previous blogs I have addressed extinction itself, and its severe consequences. Many may be wondering what could we possibly do as individuals to help raise awareness and stop extinction. While it is true that we can’t individually go out and and make an immediate impact, every voice matters. The biggest impact we could make is through “speaking up for nature” according to activists. We cannot personally decide that a ecosystem should be protected, but if we speak up, raise awareness and gain favor in numbers, it becomes an issue law makers cannot ignore. This is exercising our rights in the constitution as “we the people”, if a majority margin agrees upon the issue it cannot just be looked over. Exercising our  freedom of speech is the most powerful option we have.

There are also changes you can make to your daily life that will make a small difference, but in large numbers would greatly increase chances of survival for endangered species. One would trading in your vehicles with high carbon emissions and large fossil fuel consumptions for a cleaner alternative. The only issue with this option which has the biggest change a single person could make, tends to be on the pricey side. But there happens to be a couple less expensive things that could make a difference as well. These being carefully choosing your food, and traveling smarter. Most packaged food contains palm oil. This is extracted from trees in many environmentally threatening ways. Choosing a food option without palm oil puts less money in the pockets of big companies causing so many issues. By traveling smarter, I mean with picking destinations, and means of getting there. For example instead of going to a tourist location with large companies and businesses everywhere, go to a less populated area. The less traffic through an ecosystem the better off it will be and one of the most important thing we could do is stop giving our money to people who put it back to destroying the earth. Making simple changes to how you spend your money can make the greatest change as an individual other than reducing your own carbon footprint.

  1. I like how you mentioned that making a small change in our daily lives doesn’t seem like much, but when many people make that change it makes a big difference. I feel like a lot of people overlook what doing small things can really make an impact on because they think they can’t make a change themselves.

  2. I really liked this presentation. As people we cannot do anything from one day to the next that is why I share the same way of thinking as you and that is that for a great change to really happen I think that governments, from different parts of the world should work together but the truth is that they act as if nothing happened and we are really in crisis.

  3. Great work,We can't do anything from one day to the next, which is why I agree with your point of view that major change requires collaboration among governments throughout the world, but the truth is that they act as if nothing has happened, despite the fact that we are in a serious situation.
