Deforestation - Caleb Monnig
Deforestation has been a huge problem not just in the United States, but around the world for decades now. A lot of people think deforestation is primarily used for paper production, but only about 10% of all deforestation is used to produce paper. Cattle ranchers, soybean farmers, and palm oil plantations make up the other 90%. Since 1990, over 420 million hectares of forest has disappeared from deforestation (one hectare is nearly 2.5 acres). Approximately 2,400 trees are being cut down every minute, and a forest the size of a football field is cut down every second. This adds up to be 14,800 square miles per year. It is sad to see the amount of animals and plants that are heavily affected and going instinct due to deforestation. It also terribly effects the climate because so much carbon dioxide is released from all the trees cut down.
Deforestation in the United States
Every year, U.S. states lose 36 million trees. From 2001-2019, the U.S. lost 973,000 square miles of forest due to deforestation. The states that have been the biggest victims of deforestation are Alaska, Alabama, Georgia, and Mississippi.
