De-Extinction Projects- Pleistocene Park

Several years ago millions of wooly mammoths, bison, oxen, reindeer all lived in the grassland of Northern Siberia, today though the land is a tundra. What was once a beautiful ecosystem with these animals was ruined through the reckless and selfish human activities. In efforts to restore the ecosystem again in a corner of Siberia, Sergey Zimov and his son are leading a charge to try to restore the lost mammoth steppe of what was the Pleistocene era. Their project Pleistocene Park is a big reserve that is 160- square kilometers long, and they have even started a Patreon campaign in hopes getting support from others. Their goal is to restore all the variety of animals that once lived there. The reason that they’re pushing for this park is to counter the effects of climate change.  In the Arctic the permafrost sits underground, and if the temperature increases just even a little bit it’s thaw will release a heavy amount of methane and carbon dioxide into our air, to an extreme that no other ecosystem source can compare, but the presence of mega herbivores can significantly lower ground temperatures and stop the thaw. This is why there is an urgency for De-Extinction projects such as this one.

  1. Nice information that’s really messed up how humans mess a lot of things up and don’t even know it and if they do know they don’t care. What stuck out ti me is that their goal is to restore the land. I say that because that mean we are trying to move forward and save the earth, humans and animals

  2. When reading your blog, I was really intrigued with the information you provided. I am not surprised on how us humans have caused animals extinction and how we ruined their beautiful ecosystem. Another thing that I would like to point out is the title you picked out of your blog which caught my attention. A question that I have for you is, how are scientists trying to bring back to life the animals that are now dead?
